“If women can be railroad workers in Russia, why can’t they fly in space?” This famous quote comes from Valentina Tereshkova, who became the first-ever woman in space. She stands among other inspirational women, such as Rosa Parks, Frida Kahlo, Elizabeth Taylor, and many, many more. These women have fought for justice and strived for equality, paving the road for future generations to follow in their footsteps.
The first observance of Women’s Day was back on February 28, 1909. It wasn’t celebrated annually on March 8 until 1914, and in 1996, International Women’s Day began observing a different theme each year. What began with “Celebrating the Past, Planning for the Future,” now leads to the theme of 2017, which is “Be Bold for Change.”
